The ICTP project’s primary lecturers are prominent faculty members at Beijing Language and Culture University. They have extensive knowledge and experience in training international Chinese language teachers and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Many of the lecturers have published influential training manuals and books, moderated or participated in numerous national academic research projects, and lectured at countless seminars outside of China.


Xun Liu

Xun Liu

Xun Liu is the academic leader for degree education specializing in Curriculum and Instruction Theory (TCFL), chief editor of BLCU Press for Chinese language textbooks and manuals, member of National Han Ban Chinese language teaching and academic expert advisory panel, National HSK Commission Advisory Committee member, board member of International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, and advisor to the New York State board of education’s Chinese program. Some of his most popular publications include Practical Chinese Reader, and its revised edition New Practical Chinese Reader – one of the longest and most widely used manuals for Chinese teaching today. Other selected publications include Chinese for Children, Chinese for Social Interaction in 100 Lessons, Beginner’s Chinese, and Chinese Letter Writing Handbook.

His other books, Exploring TCFL, Introduction to TCFL Pedagogy, Introduction to Chinese as a Second Language Pedagogy, and Introduction to TCFL are often used as required textbooks for both undergraduate and graduate programs nationwide.


Dr. Wen Cao

Dr. Wen Cao

Dr. Wen Cao is a doctoral advisor at Beijing Language and Culture University and Dean of the College of Chinese Language. His areas of interest include experimental phonetics and general theory in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. He is a board member of Phonetic Association of China and committee member of the National Acoustic Language, Hearing and Music commission. He was a winner of BLCU’s Young Teacher Excellence Award and was selected into the New Century Young Talents program at the National Ministry of Education.

His recent publications include Graded Chinese Syllables: Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages – National Standard (Joint Author), Chinese Teaching Audio Flipchart, Chinese Phonetics (CD), Chinese Pronunciation Course and other phonetics related manuals. He presided at the “Technical Acoustics for Chinese Learning” program (EU’s lifelong language learning project), “Chinese phonetics database for foreign students” and “computer-aided study of Chinese pronunciation system for foreign students” (Ministry of Education, major project), “Mandarin tone system research” (National Han Ban) and other national projects.


Yanmin Liang

Yanmin Liang

Yanmin Liang is a master’s program professor Beijing Language and Culture University. His main area of research is the study of Chinese characters. He has contributed to the International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education, Chinese as a Foreign Language Standardized Proficiency Exam, and Teaching Chinese to Foreign Students at Higher Education. He is also the editor-in-chief of the following books: Great Wall Chinese, JingYing Chinese, Chinese Listening and Speaking Course, Chinese Characters Course, Chinese Humorous Stories and “Chinese Good Person” – listening and speaking skills development through a series of film viewings.

He served as the director of Confucius Institute at University of Sheffield, UK. In 2009, he was named “Advanced Intellect” at the 4th annual Confucius Institute Conference.


Dr. Hongbin Wang

Dr. Hongbin Wang

Dr. Hongbin Wang is a master’s program professor at Beijing Language and Culture University. She specializes in international education and has over 23 years experience in Chinese language teaching. She has taught 15 undergraduate courses, 4 postgraduate courses, covering all the teaching materials for the 4-year undergraduate and 2-year graduate programs.

Her publications include Preposition in Chunqiu Zuo Zhuan and she co-edited The Big Cihai. She was the deputy editor of Chinese Idiom Dictionary, and Feng Guang Han Yu – Elementary Reading and Writing (Vol. 1).


Dr. Qiangong Liu

Dr. Qiangong Liu

Dr. Qiangong Liu is a master’s program professor at Beijing Language and Culture University. She specializes in international education and has over 31 years of experience in Chinese language teaching. She has taught 25 undergraduate courses and 15 postgraduate courses, covering all the teaching materials for the 4-year undergraduate, 2-year graduate programs, and overseas Chinese teacher training. She served as the Chinese director of Confucius Institute at Keimyung University in South Korea.

Her selected publications include Introduction to TCFL, Chinese Art History. She is also involved in editorial works of many textbooks Exploring Chinese Culture – A Chinese Reader, To Learn Chinese with Keimyung (Vol. 1-4), Chinese for College Students series, Reading Chinese News, Course of Chinese Periodicals and Topics on Contemporary China – Advanced Reading and Expression Course, among others.

She was awarded the “9th Distinguished Teacher of higher education in Beijing” in 2013.


Yan Zhai

Yan Zhai

Yan Zhai is a master’s program professor at Beijing Language and Culture University. She serves as Dean of the Chinese Preparatory School. She specializes in teaching Chinese as a second language, Chinese speaking, and preparation of exam materials. Her academic publications include Spoken Chinese: Teaching and Testing, To Teach Chinese This Way – on Language Skills (Joint Author), Teaching Skills of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, Short-Term Spoken Chinese, Chinese in 10 days, To Learn Chinese in an Easy Way. Among these, Short-Term Spoken Chinese is the required textbook under Ministry of Education - 11th national five-year plan.

She’s was awarded the second prize (first prize was vacant) at the inaugural Han Ban’s Excellence in Teaching Ceremony. In 2012, she served as the chair of the Chinese teachers training project and was awarded “Beijing Higher Education Achievement Award.”


Liping Jiang

Liping Jiang

Liping Jiang is a doctoral program supervisor at Beijing Language and Culture University. She specializes in foreign language theory and teaching methods. Her publications and editorial works include Introduction to TCFL, Chinese Classroom Language Course for Teachers, How to Teach Chinese as a Second Language (Joint Author), the Experiencing Chinese series (including textbooks, teacher’s reference books, workbook, E-lesson plans etc.), Beautiful Chinese (Vol. 1-6) for middle school and high school programs, Step by Step in Chinese Course (Vol. 1-4), A Comprehensive Course in Elementary Chinese, and others.

She has participated in many major projects involving the Ministry of Education, the National Social Science fund, and Beijing Philosophy and Social Science Planning.


Jiwei Fu

Jiwei Fu

Jiwei Fu is the deputy director of the Confucius Institute at Beijing Chinese Language and Culture University. His main area of research is foreign language teaching mode and methods and he has engaged in international Chinese language education for more than 10 years.

He served as the director of Confucius Institutes in Pakistan, France and the United States. His academic works include Applied Linguistics, Han Ban required key textbook New Target Chinese Language (Vol. 4-5) as well as Business Chinese.

He has been participating a number of state language commission projects.


Dr. Long Cheng

Dr. Long Cheng

Dr. Long Cheng is a master’s program professor at Beijing Language and Culture University. His main areas of research include history of cultural exchange, international Chinese language education history, Chinese history and Chinese geography. His monograph “Study on the Food Supply Geography in Northwest War Area of Northern Song Dynasty” was sponsored by oriental historical research foundation and was a collection of the “Oriental History Academic Library.” His other book is titled “Desert Wind: History of Sandstorm and its Realistic Thinking.”

He presided at the Postdoctoral Science Foundation project at Peking University entitled “The military reclamation near Song-Xia border and environmental evolution of the Loess Plateau in 11th-13th century.” He has participated in more than 10 projects involving the Ministry of Education, National Natural Science Foundation and the Beijing Social Science Foundation.

The main courses taught by Dr. Cheng: History of Cultural Exchange, Chinese Culture, Intercultural Communications.


Xuemei Zhao

Xuemei Zhao

Xuemei Zhao has worked at the Institute of Language Information Processing and at the Online Education College of Beijing Language and Culture University for a number of years. She has engaged in teaching and research of international Chinese education for over 20 years, presided over the international Chinese education platform project, and designed and developed the online education platform for Chinese teacher training and Chinese language learning online: eBLCU.com. She is currently responsible for all the development and operations of eBLCU.com.

She is the project manager for Han Ban’s key program “Teaching Mode Study on ‘Great Wall Chinese’.” She is also involved in the preparation of International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education, Great Wall Chinese – Essentials in Communications (Vol. 1-6), Complete Handbook of Spoken Chinese, and others. Ms. Zhao has participated in preparatory work for Sino-US online language learning project Chenggo Chinese.

Main courses taught by Professor Zhao: The Application of Modern Education Technology in Teaching Chinese as a Second language, Chinese Information Processing, Education Technology in Contemporary China.
